The CD58 antigen is a heavily glycosylated protein of 65-70 kDa, known as the Leukocyte Function Associatedmolecule-3 (LFA-3). It is a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily with two extracellular domains. It is structurally similar to its ligand, CD2, and also to CD48. It mediates the interaction of target cells with activated T cells and thymocytes. When bound to its ligand CD2, it enhances T cell stimulation. This antigen is widely expressed on leukocytes, erythrocytes and endothelial cells. AICD58 antibody is a blocking antibody in LFA-3 mediated adhesion. It was evaluated during the Fifth International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
