The R9.12 antibody recognizes the variable d1 segment of the gd T cell receptor. Vd1 is rearranged on both Ca and Cd and is expressed in these two cell types. R9.12 reacts only with gd+ Vd1+ cells and not with ab+ Vd1+ cells. Vd1+ gd+ cells are the major T cell population at birth and are over expressed in intestinal intraepithelial lymphocytes.
