This antibody reacts with members of a new family of p58 molecules. These molecules are expressed on human NK cells and behave as negative signaling receptors for certain HLA class I molecules presented by encountered cells. The GL183 epitope is present on the p58 molecules that are receptors for HLA-Cw3 and Cw3-related alleles. GL183 antibody is specific for a subpopulation of NK cells. It can enable the lysis by human NK Clones of otherwise lysis-protected targets carrying HLA-Cw3 or a related allele.
