The CD117 antigen is the protooncogene c-kit which belongs to the class III receptor tyrosine kinase family. This antigen is the receptor for a growth factor encoded by the steel locus (Steel Locus Factor "SLF"). The CD117 antigen is expressed on very few normal bone marrow cells. The majority of CD117+ marrow cells co-express CD34. 95C3 and 17F11 antibodies react with BFU-E, CFU-GEMM, CFU-GM and CFU-G. 95C3 antibody reduces the binding of SLF to its receptor to about half of the maximum value. 17F11 antibody down regulates c-kit in a similar fashion to SLF. 95C3 and 17F11 antibodies were evaluated during the Fifth International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
