The CD98 antigen is a heterodimer of a glycosylated heavy chain (80 kDa), disulphide-linked with a non-glycosylated light chain (40 kDa). The light chain amino acid sequence and structure are not known, but the heavy chain is a 529 a.a. long, type II integral membrane protein, with four N-linked sites of glycosylation. CD98 antigen is present on T cells and is up-regulated upon activation. It is also expressed at low levels on other cell types including granulocytes, lymphocytes, red blood cells , and at higher levels on monocytes.Activated Natural Killer (NK) cells express high levels of this antigen. JS-5 antibody reacts with the heavy chain of CD98 antigen. It was evaluated during the Fifth International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
