The CD49d antigen is the 150 kDa integrin a4 chain which is non-covalently associated with the 130 kDa integrin b1-chain (CD29 molecule) forming the VLA-4 complex. It is the receptor for fibronectin and for VCAM-1. When associated with integrin b7 subunit in mucosal lymphocytes, it is known as the receptor for Mucosal vascular ADdressin (MadCAM-1). It is expressed by monocytes, lymphocytes, eosinophils, thymocytes and Langerhans cells. HP2/1 antibody blocks the interaction of VLA-4 with VCAM-1. This antibody was evaluated during the Fourth International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
