CD33 (MY9) antigen is a single-chain transmembrane glycoprotein with a molecular weight of 67 kDa. The extracellular part of the molecule belongs to the Ig superfamily involving one V-like and one C2-like domain. This antigen shows important homology to myelin-associated glycoprotein and the CD22 molecule. It is expressed on monocytes in peripheral blood. In the bone marrow, CD33 antigen is found on granulocyte and macrophage precursors, and is absent from pluripotent stem cells. The MY9 antibody was characterized during the Second International Workshop on Human Leukocyte Differentiation Antigens.
