An American Classic

Coulter Corporation is an American company which has grown in nearly 40 years from a two man company to a highly successful, worldwide corporation employing thousands and offering customers a broad range of instrument and reagent systems. The two engineer-entrepeneur brothers, Wallace and Joe Coulter, had an idea for an electronic, automated method of counting and analyzing blood cells.

Wallace and Joe's story is a classic. It started in a Chicago basement in 1948, when Wallace discovered the "Coulter Principle" -- a revolutionary technology that has had a profound effect on the practice of blood cell analysis, as well as other particle sizing applications. Wallace was soon joined by his younger brother Joe, an electrical engineer, and they began one-by-one production of a commercial instrument, the COULTER COUNTER® cell and particle analyzer. Research continued, sales increased, and in 1958, they launched Coulter Electronics, Inc.

From the company evolved an industry: automated hematology analysis. Today, about 95% of all blood cell counters in use are either manufactured by Coulter or are clones based on the Coulter Principle. Over the years, Coulter has compiled a long list of impressive technology firsts, establishing a worldwide reputation as a technology leader. It has created many new products that have significantly impacted the detection, treatment and prevention of disease. As one testament to Coulter's inventive spirit, over 2,400 patents have been awarded since the company was founded.

Over the years, Wallace and Joe continued to exhibit a remarkable entrepreneurial flair. The wholly-owned, privately-held, family corporation is the world leader in blood cell analysis. With it's world headquarters in Miami, Coulter Corporation employs over 5,000 "extended family" members working in 18 subsidiary companies around the world. Customer loyalty to Coulter is legendary, based upon the founders' and the company's commitment to technological leadership and customer support.
