Tissue Injury
Our research has involved developing a better understanding of the role of oxidants in tissue injury. We have developed several new technologies for measuring intracellular oxidants in viable cells. The purpose of these studies is to understand better the causes of infection, and tissue damage secondary to trauma related injuries. If we can intervene to modify the subsequent tissue damage caused by the immune system, this may allow us to develop better therapies for seriously injured patients. Our studies involve tissue culture of endothelial cells and a model has been established to replicate neutrophil-induced tissue damage.
Immune effects of toxic chemicals
The second area of concern in our lab involves the effect of polychlorinated biphenols (pcbs) on the immune response of individuals. We have developed cell culture systems for evaluation of the effect pcbs have on differentiation and cell function of HL-60 cells. We have also performed many studies on human neutrophils and have shown effects of pcb on the ability of neutrophils to function normally. A significant recent finding has been that some pcbs are capable of binding and inactivating superoxide dismutase, an important enzyme in all cells in the body for removing superoxide anions, potentially dangerous reactive oxygen species. It is therefore possible that continuous low concentrations of pcbs are capable of increasing the sensitivity of tissue to dangerous reactive oxygen species.

Laboratory Facilities:

Instrumentation is detailed in the following section. Laboratory space includes cell culture facilites, animal housing, flow cytometry and confocal microscopy instrumentation areas, preparation areas and engineering development space.
The laboratory is situated in the Cancer Center (Hansen Hall) and also houses the Analytical Cytology Core of the Cancer Center.
