Laboratory Profile

Director:

Alberto Orfao, MD, PhD

1.Facilities available: 100 m 2 facility containing instrumentation, computer facilities and lab facilities.

2. Instrumentation:

Flow Cytometry: Becton Dickinson FACStar with an ILT argon ion air-cooled laser; FACScan with Consort 32 software; FACSPrep with Consort 30 software.

Image Cytometry: Becton Dickinson Discovery image cytometry system with fluorescence and absorption microscopy.

Other major items: Shandon Cadenza automated preparation systems for slide smears and cytocentrifuge preparations; Other items available in cytometry lab (centrifuges, fluorescence microscopes, IBM PC computers, etc.)

3. Specialization areas: Leukemia/lymphoma immunophenotyping; IUV immunophenotyping; DNA analysis; FISH methodology; Platelets; Proliferation-associated assays; Reticulocytes; Mitochondrial studies; Analysis of pancreata zymogen granules.

4. Training Opportunities: All dealing with the previous items, including sample preparation, acquisition/ analysis of data and data interpretation.

5. Special courses offered: Detection of minimal residual disease in acute leukemias; Recent applications of flow cytometry; FISH technology; Applied FISH; Cell sorting techniques, Quality assurance in clinical flow cytometry; Principles and application of flow cytometry (basic course). Most of the courses are included within the EC Comett II Program.

6. Graduate Program: Included in the Spanish PhD program.

7. Local Accomodations: University facilities from 25-40 $ per night. There are also inexpensive hotels

(less than 130$ per week), breakfast usually included. In all cases, the lab facilities can be reached by 5 min walking.

8. Transportation: Closest major airport is Madrid-Barajas (MAD), There is a bus service connecting

Madrid and Salamanca every hour (25$ each way).

9. Cost of Internships: No costs. Additional support can be obtained by members of TATIANA (Trans

European Association for Training in Image Analysis) for accomodation and travel expenses,
