Director:

Jose Macia-Virgili, MD

Expert Scientist: Javier Gomez-Arbones, PhD

1.Facilities available: General biology and hematology laboratory containing basic lab instrumentation. Office space and computer facilities are available for visiting scientists.

2. Instrumentation:

Flow Cytometry: Coulter EPICS Profile I upgraded with Power Pack (15 mW, 488 nm air-cooled Ar laser; 4 PMTs; variety of optical filters). Becton Dickinson FACSort (15 mW, 488 nm air-cooled Ar laser; pneumatic sorting).

Other major items: Fluorescence photomicroscope. Five-head optical microscope attached to video camara and video printer device.

Computers and Analytical: Flow Net communication between Profile I and external computer. Cytometry software includes: Coulter ProfileII, Cytologic and Elite; Becton Dickinson Consort 3.2 with Autocomp, LYSYSII, Paint-a-Gate, HLA B27, ReticCount, SimulSe t and CellFit ; Phoenix MulfiCycle. Non cytometric software includes expertise in word processors, graphics and statistics. Color scanner and modem (lbenext and bibliographic data base) are available.

3. Specialization areas: DNA and immunophenotype analysis in onco-hematologic disorders and AIDS. Simultaneous surface antigen and DNA staining. Double- and triple color immunophenotyping. Also, DNA cells.

4. Training Opportunities: Preparation and handling of specimens for flow cytometry and sorting. Phenotypic characterization of onco-hematologic and AIDS samples. DNA analysis, simultaneous DNA- and surface antigen analysis and DNA-histogram interpreta tion of fresh and archival samples.

5. Special courses offered: None at this moment.

6. Graduate Program: None at this moment.

7. Local Accomodations: variety of hotels are available. Detailed information under request.

8. Transportation: Closest major airport is Barcelona (BCN) at 156 km., with train and bus services running daily. Lleida is 140 km east of Zaragoza and 456 km northeast of Madrid.

9. Cost of Internships: No charge for training in routinely immunophenotyping and DNA studies. No charge for training in sorting. If special or extraordinary expensive procedures are required, reagents must be supplied by the visitor. Time for interns hip is negotiable, but preferably limited to 1 month, always by previous arrangement with the laboratory Director.
