Laboratory Profile

Director: Miguel Sanchez Perez

1.Facilities available: 10 m 2 facilities containing cytometer facility, microbiology and molecular biology labs, tissue culture room and office space.

2. Instrumentation:

Flow Cytometry: Becton Dickinson FACStar PLUS with Innova 70-2 argon laser and spectrum laser with UV and red emission, ACDU and pulse processors. Also available two FACScan.

Microscopy: Bio-Rad MRC 1000 inverted confocal microscope with air-cooled dual emission argon laser. Floroscence microscope (inverted and right configuration).

Other major items: Beckman spectrophotometer, ELISA plate reader. Tissue culture facilities. General molecular biology lab instrumentation.

Computers and Analytical: Data analysis software is based in Becton Dickinson CONSORT 30 and CONSORT 32programs. Included FACScan and FACStar PLUS research software, CHRONYS, CellFit, Paint-a Gate and Paint-a Gate Plus, LYSYS II, PC-LYSYS, etc.

3. Specialization areas: General Microbiology, including morphogenesis and cell integrity studies, species identification, reporter genes (b-gal and exoglucanase), metabolic patterns through cell cycle (proteins, pH. viability, etc.), yeast cell-cycle mu tants, plasmids, etc. Hepatotoxicity, viral infection kinetics, growth factor effects (pH, Ca ++ , membrane potential, redox state, etc.). Use of probes for oxidation, including DCFH-DA, Hydroethidine and dihydrorhodamine 123, Immunophenotyping. Cell sorti ng for Microbiology and general applications.

4. Training Opportunities: Microbiological applications of flow cytometry; Sorting; Use of metabolic probes; Immunophenotyping.

5. Special courses offered: FACScan and FACStar PLUS instrument usage. Data analysis and Acquisition Software courses.

6. Graduate Program: None.

7. Local Accomodations: University facilities close to the lab (about 45$ per night including breakfast).

Local hotels with a wide price range.

8. Transportation: Local airport is Madrid-Barajas airport (MAD), regularly conected with major international airports. Bus shuttles from/to the airport cost 2$. Underground from the center of town to the University.

9. Cost of Internships: Base rate of 70.000 PTA (about 550$), including all the reagents and the flow cytometer time. The best time for courses and internships is during July and August.
