Laboratory Profile

Director: Prof J. Holowiecki

1. Facilities available: 240 m 2 facility containing: flow cytometer room, fluorescence microscopy facilities, tissue culture and cytogenetics room, molecular biology rooms, cryopreservation facilities, computers, and routine hematological lab.

2. Instrumentation:

Flow cytometry: FACStar plus with cell sorter and air-cooled argon laser model 5500A.

Other major items: Epifluorescent photomicroscopes.

Computers an Analytical: All flow cytometer analysis is based on Hewlett Packard system LYSIS II. Non-cytometric software consists of statistical programs (BMDP, SPSS, Statgraphics); graphics programs (Corel Draw, Harvard Graphics) and others (MS Excel, Access). All data are collected in special data base Leukos 7, containing over 2,000 patients immunophenotyped in the period of 1983-94.

3. Specialization areas: Immunophenotyping of leukemia and lymphoma cells; Monitoring of patients before and after bone marrow transplantation; Residual disease; Monitoring of patients with growth factor treatment; Stem cells.

4. Training Opportunities: Isolation and staining of cells from peripheral blood, bone marrow and lymph nodes with monoclonal antibodies, Immunofluorescence and immunoenzymatic (APAAP) techniques of typing. Control of CD34+ cells after positive purging (immunoabsortion and immunomagnetic methods).

5. Special courses offered: Current periodical postmedical training for physicians.

6.Graduate Program: Currently, demonstrations for students.

7. Local Accomodations: Rooms in the University Hotel (about 30$ per day, without breakfast).

8.Transportation: By plane to the airport Okecle/Warsow, then by Eurointercity to Katowice (about 3-4

h) or by plane to Pyrzowice/Katowice and by bus to the center of Katowice (about 1.5 h).
