Our Clinical Applications of Cytometry (CAC) meeting in August was
once again definitely worth attending. The Wallace H. Coulter
Distinguished lecture by Peter Rabinovitch, entitled Cytometry vs.
Cell Biology: Are we pulling on the same oar? opened the meeting.
The lecture was provocative and highly informative. If you want to
learn whether we ARE pulling on the same oar, read his paper to be
published in an upcoming issue of Communications in Clinical
Cytometry (CCC).

The half day sessions on Methodological and Practical Issues for HIV
Immunophenotyping sponsored by the Division of AIDS, NIAID, and the
Clinical Cytometry Society (CCS) was well attended and generated a
great deal of useful discussion among flow operators. This session
with variations will be repeated next year.

The Commercial Workshops presented by Becton Dickinson,
Immunocytometry Systems, Coulter Corporation, Ortho Diagnostic
Systems, Pharmagen, Flow Cytometry Standards Corporation, Sigma
Resources and Verity Software House, Inc. were excellent.

The formal part of the meeting, the four plenary sessions: I-
Transplantation Applications of Flow Cytometry, II- Issues in
Managing a Successful Clinical Cytometry Laboratory: Surviving into
the 21st Century, III- Future Directions in Cytometry, and IV- Flow
Cytometric Assessment of Cell Functions; reviewed the current status
and future of clinical cytometry, and highlighted areas of research
that have clinical relevance. Ninety-eight abstracts were accepted
and presented as posters and 26 as oral presentations. Daily
luncheon workshops were over-subscribed and for some individuals
these were the most useful part of the meeting.

In addition to the highly informative scientific and practical
clinical presentations and the stimulating discussions, the elegant
receptions provided by Becton Dickinson and Ortho and the always
enjoyable annual beach party by Coulter are additional inducements
that helps keep our attendees coming back to Charleston every year.

Those of you who have not attended a CAC meeting are missing a lot.
We hope to see you next year in Charleston for the Twelfth Annual
Meeting of Clinical Applications of Cytometry (August 20-23, 1997).

The clinical cytometry journal, Communications in Clinical Cytometry
has proven to be highly successful. After two years of publication
as a quarterly journal it will be increased to six issues in 1997.
for those of you who have written clinically oriented cytometry
manuscripts and are looking for an appropriate journal, keep us in
mind. For further information regarding the CAC meeting, CCS or CCC
