As a long time user of flow cytometry and a heavy user of E-mail
communications, I protest the dilution of meaningful discussion among the
cytometry group by trivial chatter. I get E-mail downloads from the server
hourly, and some messages require urgent responses. It is a nuisance and
waste of time to sort through 8-10 messages to find the one I need.

One solution is self-restraint. That rarely works (e.g., just say NO).
How about a subject header that clearly labels the message, like "LONG SORT
FILLER".
