I asked a similar question a while back and currently there are no
antigenic determinants specific for Th1 and Th2 cells, hence the lack of
flow analysis methods. Currently it can only be done by comparing the
cytokine profiles produced by the cells. The hallmark cytokines of the Th1
response are IFN-gamma, IL-2, and IL-12. Cytokines produced by Th2 cells
are IL-4, IL-10, IL-5, IL-6 and IL-13. I can understand the neccessity for
this determination in HIV infected individuals as Clerici et. al., 1993,
Immunology Today, 14:107, showed that the combination of increased levels
of IL-4 and IL-10 were indidcative of the Type 2 profile and rapid
progression of HIV infection.
