Coulter upgrades?

We have a fairly old (1989?) Coulter Profile flow cytometer :(
Apparently it was never lucky enough to get the Coulter Powerpak
upgrade which I understand means that the on-board computer's
CPU becomes a '286, so we are still fighting the old 8088 - ugh!
Does anyone on the list know whether it is possible to effect
a processor upgrade oneself, without getting charged $$$$$$ by
Coulter? Inside, it appears that there is an XT motherboard
and some sort of expansion board. Is it possible to replace
one or other of these with a regular 286 (386??) motherboard?

Or am I fantasizing?

Any advice gratefully received!
