On 8/29/96, I asked list about alternatives to using Coherent (approx cost
$14k) to replace our dead I-90-5 tube and received a number of helpful
replies, which i have reprinted here by request. Thanks to all who were kind
enough to respond.

We have just gotten the ball rolling with Evergreen(203-349-1798), on basis
of recommendations and relative geographic proximity (I figure it is good to
be within "arms" reach). They are sending us a crate to use for our laser
head, as ours is long gone. $3575 is the quoted price for the rebuild of our
tube. If the tube is beyond rebuild (eg cracked) they can provide one, at
additional cost. We need to pay for shipping which is estimated to be about
$200 FedEx each way (boston<->durham, connecticut). We are told the work
will take from 3-5 days. I gather they also can look at power supply
problems. Feel free to email for our results/satisfaction; we hope to turn
this around a quickly as possible rather than moving other water cooled
lasers around our lab.

I have just had a laser tube replaced in a Coherent 90-5. Work was done by
Richard Ballard of Grapevine Lasers (phone 817-488-3137). Work is excellent
and the least expensive as determined by our Univ. purchasing by a bid
process. A Coherent tube was used. I recommend Grapevine Laser to anyone
who needs post warranty laser work.

Marcia Woda asked:

"usually the labor to install is almost insignificant compared to the cost of
the tube---Does this grapevine company get the tube for you as well at some
discounted price? Are they a nation-wide company?"

Yes the tube is discounted and they go anywhere in the country I believe

We used Evergreen Laser, 9G Commerce Circle, Durham CT 06422.
(203-349-1798). The cost (two years ago) for laser rejuvenation was $3500
plus shipping. This included new Brewsters, tweaking powersupply, fill,
etc. They gave suggestions on shipping, etc. I was a nervous wreck, but it
all worked out fine. Larry Johnson at USDA has also used their services and
has the highest compliments, and he uses high power UV applications for DNA
(need tight CVs and stability). I can provide his number if you'd like.

At TSRI (Scripps), we had a tube on an Innova 90 replaced by Laser
Innovations. When I left Scripps, that tube had about 2000 hours on it over
a period of about 2 years. The UV power was never great (150 mW max after
replacement, about 50 mW for a year or so, then down to about 20 mW
recently), but the visible power was consistently good. It was used most of
the time for pumping a dye laser, and for this it was great. I am really not
sure if the tube was originally a "UV specification" tube because it was
ordered by a coworker who left by the time it was installed. The laser was
stable (mode, power) and performed well. The Laser Innovations tube cost
approx $5,000, while a Coherent replacement would have cost about $14,000.
The only catch is that (my understanding is that) if you replace a Coherent
tube with another vendor's tube, Coherent will not service your laser (power
supply nor tube) thereafter.

Contact LaserInnovations in MoorPark, California. The contact name is Eric
King.
Phone Number is 805-529-5864. He completely rebuilds the tubes and gives the
same warranty as Coherent for half the money.
