Colleagues,

All of us in this business are here both to push back the frontiers of
human knowledge and to make a buck. The differences among us lie in
the priorities each of us assigns to the 2 pursuits. Rabid scientific
purists, who may well be more prevalent in Britain (and Australia),
would assign a much lower priority to making a buck than would those
working in the much more commercially oriented environment of the USA
(or the Sultanate of Oman). This comment should *not* be read as
vituperative; I simply point out that different cultural attitudes
arise from different environments and this could explain the different
points of view already expressed on this subject.

In my opinion, for what it is worth, the moderators of this list
should *not* wield the big stick; we can all filter the useful from
the useless ourselves. However, I would point out to all contributors
that it is far less useful to say "Its in my latest book. Buy it."
than to quote the information directly (by all means plugging your
book or CD at the same time), or at least give a reference to a
scientific journal which is free for all to read.
