JOB VACANCY

National Institutes of Health
National Cancer Institute
Division of Basic Sciences
Experimental Immunology Branch
Flow Cytometry Laboratory

Position Title: Biologist

Series/Grade: GS-0401-09/11

Salary Range: $28,912 - $48,222

Closing Date: 07-22-96

Announcement #: CA-96-0910

Duties of the Position:

The Experimental Immunology Branch (EIB) Flow Cytometry Laboratory, carries
out research laboratory investigations in cellular immunology,
immunochemistry and clinical immunology using immunoflourescence analysis
and electronic cell sorting. The major components of this laboratory are a
Becton-Dickinson FACSTAR PLUS Three Laser Flow Cytometer controlled by a
MVAX 3500 computer and networked to three additional MVAX computers. The
laboratory also supports three B-D FACScans, small user operated air-cooled
laser based flow cytometers. The EIB flow cytometry laboratory provides
research support for investigators of the EIB, other labs within DBS and
laboratories elsewhere. The incumbent is a biologist who directly performs
the flow cytometry analysis and maintains the flow cytometer and associated
instrumentation. The incumbent will operate the B-D FACSTAR PLUS and
perform flow cytometry analysis and cell-sorting for a large number of
ongoing research projects involving a wide variety of problems in cellular
immunology, immunobiology, immunochemistry, molecular immunology and
clinical immunology. The incumbent has primary responsibility for the
direct application of the highly specialized area of flow cytometry to these
problems. Validity, completeness and quality of the experimental results
depend upon appropriate selection of multiple possible instrument
configurations and multiple possible types of data to be acquired. The
incumbent is expected to independently apply principles and procedures of
flow cytometry and cellular biology in order to customize the flow cytometry
analysis to the widely diverse goals of individual experiments. The
incumbent adapts and modifies available flow cytometry methods, procedures
and instrumentation and software for proper functionality and suggests
modifications to improve and/or correct functionality. The incumbents also
performs data analysis.
