To explain:-
A couple of months ago, while processing Thiazole Orange retics on our cytometer
an homozygous Hgb E patient's UNSTAINED reticulocyte control (i.e. Rbc's in PBS
alone) showed a very high degree of fluorescence when compared to a normal
unstained control - around 50 % positivity extending over one decade.
This was confirmed recently when the patient returned for a follow up visit.
As this is the only E disease patient we have, since it is rare in the middle
east, we were unable to establish whether this is due to the Hgb E or to some
other factor.
Any input from people working in the far east, or input from anyone with ideas
as to what could cause this, would be much appreciated.
