Quiescent (G0) cells have been characterized as:

1. Having very low RNA content (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci USA, 73:2881,
1976)- they have approx. 10 fold fewer ribosomes compared to G1 cells
as established in classical studies by Penman and his collaborators
in 60s.

2. Showing minimal uptake of mitochondrial probe Rhodamine 123 (PNAS,
78,2383,1981).

3. Not expressing cyclins D and E (Leukemia, 9: 893, 1995).

There are many other markers discriminating G0 cells, as discussed in
chapters in Flow Cytometry & Sorting, MR Melamed, T Lindmo & ML
Mendelsohn, Eds, Wiley-Liss, 1990
