white cell counts

Dear everyone,
I need to perform some total white cell counts on platelet rich plasma
samples using flow. I have only one reference for this and it uses a method
of weighing the tube pre- and post-sampling; this seems somewhat in-elegant :-(
I intend to spike the samples with a known concentration of beads to acheive
the same result.
Does anyone have a good method for this, which beads do you use (BD "true
count" beads or some others ?. Also, do you stain the white blood cells with
PI to make gating them simpler (and more elegant) ?
Thanks in advance
