Propidium Iodide and Calcium

Does anyone know anything about the potential effects of calcium and magnesium
ions on propidium iodide/DNA staining? I have made up the PI in DPBS that
either does or does not contain calcium and magnesium and I get rather different
histograms.

It could be something else in my experiment...but I thought I would check and
see if this is a well known phenomenom before continuing.
