RE: fixative/HIV+samples/Autolyse

Specifically in response to 'Jane'...many of the commercial lysing reagents
have paraformaldehyde already in them, so certainly you should be able to
add it to yours. You should test it, though, to be sure the results are
not changed. (Question...are you certain your BD lysing agent DOESN'T have
a fixative in it?)

General comment on paraformalddehyde...I've used histo grade formalin for
years as an alternative to paraformaldehyde, with good results. Parallel
samples fixed with either paraf. or form. yielded similar results; formalin
preserved size paramenters and morphology as well. Plus...it's cheaper,
stable, easier and not as toxic to handle.
