As a brief followup on my question about why sorted Salmonella did not
grow when placed back into culture, it looks as if it might have been the
Isoton II.

As suggested by some members of this network, we repeated the experiment,
using PBS as the sheath fluid, and this time the organisms grew when
cultured. This suggests that if anyone else is using Isoton II as a
sheath fluid, they should at least be aware of some of its ingredients:

disodium EDTA 0.38 g/L
sodium fluoride 0.3 g/L
2-phenoxyethanol 3 g/L
