Hello,
The following is an announcement for a cytometry position here in beautiful
San Francisco. This is a full-time, full benefit, full-of-stimulation job
offer.

Staff Research Associate II

Summary of job duties:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the routine maintenance,
scheduling and operation of image and flow cytometers in the University of
California, San Francisco, Laboratory for Cell Analysis (LCA). He/she
will work directly with LCA researchers to execute experiments requiring
cytometric instrumentation. This position requires flexible scheduling of
work hours and ability to work independently. Some evening work will be
required.

Specific responsibilities will include setup, maintenance, quality control
and operation of a Becton Dickinson (BD) FACStar Plus dual-laser cell
sorter, two BD FACScan flow analyzers, two fluorescence-based quantitative
image processing systems (QUIPS), a confocal laser-based cytometer, and
three fluorescence microscopes.
Duties will include: (a) Periodic testing and evaluation of systems
performance using test specimens, performing routine maintenance as needed,
keeping log books of performance and maintenance actions, and coordinating
major repairs with the manufacturer. (b) Assisting with instrument use
(either through instrument setup or by instrument operation), keeping
accurate records of instrument use for billing purposes and ordering of
necessary supplies. (c) Overseeing the activities of LCA users.

Required expertise:

(a) Direct experience with flow cytometry, sorting, and fluorescence
microscopy (experience with image cytometry a plus). (b) A working
knowledge of fluorescence labeling techniques and fluorescent dye
characteristics. (c) Experience in cytometric data interpretation and
analysis. (d) Experience with a broad range of computer systems
(preferably, Macintosh, PC, Sun and HP). (e) Knowledge of laser operation
and maintenance. (f) Sufficient knowledge of cell biology, immunology,
molecular cytogenetics and histology to understand the basics of a variety
of cytometry experiments. (g) B.S. degree in biological or physical
science or the equivalent. (h) Skill in communicating with users,
explaining results, and dealing with inevitable problems in a constructive
manner.
