In response to the question regarding the life expectancy of FACS nozzles, the
ceramic flow tips should last for many years. They can be cleaned by sonication
in water, detergent solutions or bleach to remove clogs or deposits. A piece of
small diameter tubing attached to a vacuum line can also aid in removal of more
stubborn clogs.

It is possible to damage these tips with higher powered U.V. lasers if you
happen to accidently leave it in the laser path!!!!!

One trick to prevent build up of salt deposits is to flush the sample line and
tip with distilled water prior to instrument shutdown and then, once the
insrument is OFF, place a small tube (microfuge tube or cut-down test-tube)
containing water on top of the sort plates to keep the nozzle tip immersed in
water overnight (Thank-you Dave Small, BDIS, for this one). For longer periods
of "down time", it is better to run it dry.
