You are absolutely right on your assumption about Fas.
As a matter of fact the Fas antigen is expressed by a multitude of normal
tissues that will live happily forever after unless they meet a wandering
cytotoxic lymphocyte, capable of expressing FasL (Fas ligand) that doesn't
happen to like their face (meaning their MHC I or HLA -antigen combination),
in which case said wandering (cytotoxic) lymphocyte will express FasL and
beat your fas expressing tissue into Apoptosis (gasp!).
This is, of course, much oversimplified but will serve its purpose.
Since you mentioned Fas antibody as well, let me caution you that any
preparation you may use that includes Fas Ab may, in the long run, induce
apoptosis in your samples.
