Subject: optical drives
We have been using a Fujitsu optical drive to store our flow data and have
had one problem after another. We are currently on our 3rd drive in less
than 1 year.

Are these experiences usual, and if not can anyone suggest
what the source(s) of our problems may be?

Do optical disks vary significantly in quality from vendor
to vendor?

We have had a Fujitsu rewritable Magneto-optical "DynaMO 230" Disk
drive on our Power PC Macintosh for about eight months. We use it *a
lot* and have had very little trouble with it. (Knock on much wood).
Two of my FCM clients also have this brand and model drive on their
Macs downstairs and have experienced more problems than I have,
although nowhere near what Karen reports. IMO, these devices need
tender treatment in the sense of not whipping through menus quickly
but taking your time when mounting the disks and devices and
initializing and formatting, etc. I have noticed that the Macs
sometimes lock up when I try to go too fast in establishing a network
connection, or initializing a disk or setting up an acquisition
protocol. However, there very well may be a lot of variation in the
quality of these drives, and Karen may have gotten three lemons in a
row. The same thing happened to me when I used to buy Fords.
