NIH Funding and who it really affects......

EDITORIAL FROM THE NET-OWNER

Perhaps we can put aside the discussion on NIH funding for the
moment. The article posted by Dr. Darzynkiewicz was very important
to over 50% of the list. As a non-American who lives in, and benefits
from the American research dollar, I can assure my colleagures from
outside the US that pressure on our congressional reps is vital and
necessary to continued $$ in research.

How does this impact on you? Well try this, I lost one of my NIH
grants recently - this has put serious pressure on the financial
resources of my lab. While we never use NIH money to set up, run or
support this cytometry net, some of the money previously used is now
needed to pay the salaries of those supported on that grant! We could
end up closing down the bulletin board if things don't pick up in
Washington!! (Alteratively - you could all send contributions to me!!)

By the way, this group does NOT encourage public attacks or down-
dressing of any individual - I think that we have maintained some of
the highest standards possible over the 5 years we have operated.

If someone has a personal problem with a posting, please direct your
criticism privately to either me as the list-owner, or to the person
who you think deserves it. This way we don't make ant-hills into
mountains and have everyone else upset too!! It is also for this
reason that we have not set up the system so that a simple reply will
automatically go out top the entire net!

The list is now around 800 strong - congratulations to all
participants, and thank you for your support!
