RE: cell number in mouse lungs

In reply to H-P Steffens' enquiry about recovery of cells, we have
isolated and stained cells from thousands of mice. The recovery
depends on how healthy they are (sick mice have more cells) and what
you have done in the experiment. Tracy Hussell (the postdoc who is
doing most at the moment) finds in normal 12 week BALB/c mice:

Bronchoalveolar lavage cells: 3 x 10e5/mouse, >90% macrophages.
<5%lymphos. Whole lung mash: 1 x 10e6/mouse, mostly non-lymphoid.
Mediastinal lymph nodes: not found except if the mice are sick, when
they enlarge.
