RE: Paraformaldehyde fixative

I prefer paraformaldehyde prepared fresh weekly because it is free of
methanol and formic acid. Formaldehyde spontaneously produces formic acid in
solution which can denature proteins, besides it only takes 10 minutes every
week or two to make a batch and I know I am not introducing any further
unknowns.

Think about formalin. . . it's usable straight out of the bottle, and works
as well as paraformaldehyde for fixing cells. I don't know of any problems
with using it . . . my experience is paraformaldehyde and formalin give the
same results in immunofluorescence assays.
