"commercialism"

After reading the latest round of "oh God they are commercializing the net". I want to add my few pennies to the discussion.

FACT: the net is becoming more commercial everyday, like it or not.

FACT: it sure looks like Gov't funding is going to drop, making commercialization required.

As to the commercialization of this group, the members have "control" over that. My opinions on the commercialization issue stem from a nearly year long stint as a sysop on the Investor's forum on compuserve. for those not familiar with CIS, this forum is one of the busiest(about the highest scroll rate) and one of the largest, if not the largest in terms of numbers in the membership.

"advertising" was strictly prohibited. such as "broker looking for clients"

discussion of an investment was expected to be accompanied with a persons "stake in the invesment".

such as "this company xxx is doing very well, what to others think? I am a sharehlder in xxx"

IMHO, when somebody posts a question such as "what equipment is available to do ______" and the vendors that are capable of supplying _____ answer that is just fine with me. in this way the rest of the folks can see what is going on with whatever _____ is. We could end up missing some interesting tidbits, if all of a sudden every question has to be answered using private email.

Also, new product announcements should be OK as well.

just my few pennies,

Chris
