It's a few years since we did HP310 <==> pc via GPIB, but I seem to
remember that we were able to leave both the HP and the pc connected AND
both set as system controllers. I know this is a NO NO for a GPIB bus, but
as long as the pc was off when the HP was turned on/rebooted it actually
worked! We tend to leave our HP's on 24 hours a day so this wasn't a big
problem.
Another approach, if you don't want to pull cables on/off all the time, is
to toggle the `system controller' feature (set in the pc GPIB card
software) on/off as required.
