Alternatives to FACStation

Happy New Year.

Our budget just came in and we have not been allotted the $15,000+ to buy a
BD FACStation MacIntosh platform for our FACSCAN. With the money we have
been given I thought I could come up with a reasonable alternative and I
would like to get your comments on this or other alternatives, since many
of us are finding ourselves in this situation.

Proposed system:
-Continue acquisition on HP system with LysisII.
-Network HP computer to download data (FCS-I, I believe...) to MacIntosh,
using either a Quadra or PowerMac.
-Store data on a 230 MB magneto-optical disk.
-Analyze data on CellQuest with the above Macs.

Total cost of this system would be:
MO disk drive $1000, disks w $70
CellQuest software $1200
PowerMac $2000
Networking hardware

Does this seem reasonable? Does anyone have any other alternatives, either
in software or hardware?

What are your experiences with rewritable 230 MB magneto-optical disks?
MacUser had a report in the Feb '95 issue, demonstrating that they read as
fast as bernoullis, although the writing was a bit slower.

Thanks for the help!
