ELITE upgrade

We upgraded our own ELITE to a 486, without much problem. We bought
a motherboard mail order, and swapped out the motherboard in an
older 386 we had in the lab.

The only board that's special to the ELITE is the adlister board;
the one with the big ribbon cable running back to the cytometer. I
recommend being very careful with this board - it's very simple
functionally, but it is specially designed for the ELITE, and Coulter
is the only place to get one.

If you never use the ELITE computer for anything other than the
ELITE software, don't waste money on an expensive video card -
the software uses only the original VGA mode.

I would also stay away from trying to be too fancy: don't push the
BIOS speed, don't bother with a Pentium or even a 486 DX 50. Use
a 486 25 or 33 or DX2 with VLB video and VLB IDE disk drive and you
should be fairly happy with the performance increase.

NOTE: I have no idea what Coulter's policy is with respect to
service on customer-installations. If you don't have someone
around who can read the entrails on a sick PC, you should probably
check with them.
