SARATOGA, Cal. -- October 31st, 1994 -- Distinct Corporation today announced
its shipment of Distinct NFS for Windows and Windows for Workgroups.
Engineered as a 32-bit VxD, Distinct NFS provides network file and printer
sharing in a mixed vendor environment. The same Distinct NFS package can
run over Distinct TCP/IP, Microsoft TCP/IP and Novell Lan Workplace for DOS.
This is intended to allow system administrators running a mixed vendor
TCP/IP environment to standardize on a single quality file sharing product.
Distinct NFS is a pure Windows implementation, offering file sharing
capabilities to both Windows and DOS programs without the actual consumption
of any additional DOS memory.
Easy network administration is the key to Distinct's NFS implementation.
Easy to install, easy to configure and easy to run; the product reduces
network administration dramatically.
Distinct NFS offers users high performance transparent file and program
sharing across the entire network. Each NFS client is able to mount up
to 24 remote file systems concurrently. This allows the seamless sharing
of files located on other diverse systems such as UNIX, DEC, MACS and PCs.
Any file system can be mounted as long as the system runs an NFS server.
Distinct NFS does not require heavy investments in UNIX machines and other
expensive file servers, if these are not already available on your network
to implement file sharing. It comes with its own non-dedicated NFS server,
allowing system administrators to make better use of existing resources by
implementing file sharing on a PC based LAN.
Distinct NFS includes full network printer sharing capabilities. It includes
a virtual printer driver for transparent printing from any DOS or Windows
application to any printer on the network. Printers can be shared through NFS
using PCNFSD or through LPR using LPD. Both client and server capabilities
are included so that all network printers including those attached to PCs can
be shared.
