Richard,
I confronted this question when I first started here, and decided to stick
with the telnet and ftp software that we already used for net access. It's
not as convenient as other systems, but it's fast and free. I've installed
the software on each computer, and to transfer I activate a telnet session
on one PC, go over to the other (they're all in the same lab) and ftp the
files I want. I get tranfer rates around 100k/second--works for me! Let
me know if you need more details.
