Just thought I would add a contribution to the air bubble discussion. We
(Caltech flow facility) have been purging our sheath fluid for years with
Helium gas and a sparger. I learned to due this when I was working with
HPLC many moons ago. It has worked great especially on those long sorting
runs that last more than 8 hours. It doesn't seem to harm cell viability
or function and we work with all kinds of cells- from mouse thymocytes to
sea urchin coelomocytes. We let the helium sparge for about 15 minutes.
