The critical pressure to monitor (and maintain at a constant level) for stream
stability during long sorts (or otherwise) is the sheath pressure in the nozzle.
This (alnong with the nozzle size) is what controls the jet velocity and
break-off point. What we have done is to put a fluid pressure monitor in the
flush line of the BD nozzle holder and adjust the sheath air pressure to keep
this constant. Now we do this by hand and eye, but a computerized version of
this is not a great conceptual leap.
