Except that the gates are not "fixed" in any way, ie they may well  
have been moved at some point after the initial sort was started,  
particulalry if people have been looking at the files and wondering  
what might have happened if the gates were moved just a bit this way  
or that...

I prefer a more permanent record of sort gates :)
