Adrian,

One that we have found very useful (probably the most useful) is  
"Confocal Microscopy for Biologists by (the late) Alan Hibbs. It has  
good practical, "hands-on" stuff including technical quirks or	
characteristics of particular instruments.  Don't know how easily  
obtainable it is since Alan's death earlier this year but try http://
