The reference you are looking for, goes back to 1987 when Roger Festin and all demonstrated that it was possible to used colloidal gold 40nm particles to surface stain T cells in conjunction with PE and FITC without interference with the fluorescence staining. The colloidal gold staining was detected onto the side scatter channel of the 488nm laser. This is the reference:

 

Detection of triple antibody-binding lymphocytes in standard single laser flow cytometry using colloidal gold, fluorescein and phycoerythrin as labels.

Dear Fellow Flowers:

 

I have a client who has contacted me about sorting cells with gold 

nanoparticles in them.	I have a moflo with a 488nm, uv, and 635 

lasers on it.  Can I do this and if so, with which laser and at what 

wavelength will it fluoresce?

 

Just as an after thought-is this a new way to look for gold-it would 

be great to use my machine for something that might actually make me 

a little money???
