Isn't there a happy median between 'in' and 'out' of the loop? What may be spam for some, for others may be an opportunity, and this may be particularly true of courses and user group notices. I would like to think many of the worst-case scenarios could simply be avoided with a bit of considerate adherence to guidelines (written or unwritten), a little social coercion to correct minor transgressions, and a proper 'RE:'.
