RE: Calibur, Canto or LSR II???

Hi Robin,

Strange rumour indeed. BD Europe assured me they're still being manufactured
and sales have even picked up a little lately. I find it hard to believe
they won't "support" the instrument any time soon, given that they continue
to support devices like the FACScan, which are relatively dinosaursian to
the Calibur. I would expect new development of hardware add-ons and software
updates to be few and far between from now on, but that's unrelated to
hardware support.

LSR II runs DiVA, so you probably won't have to face the "stalled software
version" problem as soon as with, say, a Calibur. Also, in contrast to
Vantages and Caliburs, there are no new BD models out there to replace the
LSR II (Aria for Vantage, Canto for Calibur, resp.).

Of course, trying to read the company's mind is no science. Try calling the
reps or see the San Jose guys at the Bd stand at your next conference and
just ask; it's probably at least as informative as my guesses.

Hope this helps,

Guy

Subject: Calibur, Canto or LSR II???

Hi all (again),

A colleague is interested in purchasing a cytometer, and asked that I get
opinions from this group. She is familiar with the FACSCalibur, but has
been told that BD may discontinue them soon, and may not continue to support
them. BD suggested either the FACSCanto or the LSR II, but neither of us is
familiar with these instruments. I'm not sure how much money is available,
but I think there is at least enough for a Calibur. I believe that I have
seen previous messages here suggesting that the Canto still has issues that
are being worked out, but I'm not sure about the LSR II. Has anyone else
heard anything about the Calibur being discontinued? What would be the
advantage of the LSR II (or the Canto) over the Calibur? Is there another
instrument that she should be considering?

Thanks,

Robin
