Heads up for people using WinZip to extract "tar" files.

FCS files compressed with utilities that generate a "tar.gz" extension may
not be extracted correctly by WinZip unless the "Smart Tar" option is turned
off.

Like many (if not most) people in the PC world, we use WinZip to decompress
files.	WinZip has an option called "Smart Tar" that automatically inserts a
carriage return / line feed (CR/LF) into "tar compress" text documents as
they are extracted (see note from WinZip Support below). Insertion of
CR/LF into a FCS file creates a seemingly good data file (keyword values are
read properly so parameter labels are ok). However the data is nonsense.

Here is the response we got from WinZip Technical Support:

"I suspect that the 'Tar file smart cr/lf conversion' option is affecting
the file. Reverse the setting (ie, check or uncheck) this option on
themiscellaneous tab of WinZip's options/configuration pull down menu item.
When the TAR File smart CR/LF conversion option is in effect, WinZip
determines whether to perform CR/LFconversion for eachfile inside a TAR file
by looking at the first 80 characters in each file. If the file is a text
file then single LF and CR characters are converted to CR/LF pairs so the
file can be viewed by Notepad and other Windows viewers. Files are
considered text when the first 80 bytes contain only characters with ASCII
values between 0x20 and 0x7f, carriage returns, line feeds, form feeds,
tabs, and other alphanumeric characters (as determined by the Windows
IsCharAlphaNumeric API)."
