Monocytes /macrophages when phagocytize apoptotic bodies become positive for binding annexin V (Marquet et all., Nature, Cell Biol. 1999;1:454-459). Most likely the plasma membrane of the ingested apoptotic bodies fuses with the macrophage plasma membrane triggering externalization of phosphatidylserine. I am not surprized that Alice's monocytes appear happy because they just gulped a tasty bit of apoptotic body and are not hungry anymore.
