Suggestions for naming of digital files

Hi all,

We are starting to generate a lot of digital images from our 
microscopes. It has just been brought to my attention that no-one has 
been naming them in a consistent fashion and things are starting to 
get into a bit of mess.

I'm going to co-ordinate the introduction of some guidelines for file 
naming and I was wondering what others out there are doing? Do you 
have a organised scheme for naming digital files?

Any comments or suggestions gratefully received.

I'll report back to the list with what we settle on.
