Hi All, I would like to second Dirk Van Bockstaele in his congratulations and words of gratitude to Dick Haugland. Progress in cell biology is propelled by availability of tools that can be used to probe the cell. For as long as I remember Dick, through his highly imaginative program, was developing and providing us with such tools, offering new possibilities for cell biologists. Many accomplishments in cell biology that we witnessed in the past decades could not happen without these reagents. It is ironic that most credit and accolades for these accomplishments is generally being given to users of these tools and the tool-makers are often forgotten. Dick's contribution is not limited to developing such tools. His sequential Editions of the Handbook of Fluorescent Probes become unsurpassed encyclopedia of knowledge about application of these reagents. It certainly has an enormous educational value, grossly contributing to progress in field of cell and molecular biology. We all own to Dick a deep gratitude, because the progress in our research would be much slower without him !!!!!!!
